Veneering involves the bonding of a thin porcelain overlay (veneer) to the surface of the tooth.
Unlike direct resin bonding, Porcelain Veneers are not completed in one visit. They are indirect restorations. Your Orange County cosmetic dentist will prepare the tooth for the Veneer at one appointment and places a temporary veneer at that time. The final restoration is made by a dental ceramist in a laboratory and bonded to the tooth by the dentist at a second appointment.
Prior to being able to bond porcelain to a tooth, people who wanted to make their smile look its best would have porcelain crowns made for each tooth that showed in the smile. The amount of tooth structure removed for a crown is far greater than is necessary for a veneer. Veneers are done by bonding a thin porcelain overlay (veneer) to the surface of the tooth. Today, crowns are done instead of veneers only when the tooth being treated is structurally compromised and needs the strength of a full crown to protect what is left of it. If the tooth is strong enough but just needs some cosmetic help, a Porcelain Veneers is the treatment of choice for cosmetic dentistry in Orange County.
