What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone. Once healed, implants serve the role of tooth roots and can provide a lifetime of support for permanent restorations.

Am I a Candidate?

In order to receive dental implants, patients must be in good overall oral health and free of periodontal disease. When determining a patient's candidacy, one of the most important considerations is the strength of the jaw. Good candidates must have sufficient jawbone density to support the implanted titanium posts.

Planning Treatment

During the planning phase of your surgery, we will take great care to determine the optimal placement locations for the implanted posts. Using advanced computed tomography (CT) scans, we can obtain a 3-D image of your jawbone to identify the areas that will provide the best support for your implants. If you have more severe bone degeneration or other concerns, we can refer you to an oral surgeon for specialized treatment.

Receiving Dental Implants

Dental implant patients will typically undergo three procedures to fully restore their smile.

Placing the Implants

During your first procedure, the placement of the implants, the dentist will numb the surgical site. If you are nervous about your surgery, we can also provide nitrous oxide or intravenous (IV) sedation. Once you are comfortable, your dentist will create a small incision in the gums to access the jaw bone. Next, Dr. Smrecek will insert the implant in the missing tooth area. The incisions will be closed and the implants will be left to heal over the course of several months.

During this time, the implants will fuse with the surrounding bone through a process known as osseointegration. This process helps to return stimulation to the jaw, halting bone loss that occurs after losing a tooth. Dental implants are the only restorative treatment that offer this benefit to your oral health. We can provide a temporary restoration for you to wear while healing takes place.

Abutment Placement

When the implants have fully integrated with the the jawbone, we will perform a second procedure to place an abutment. The abutment will remain exposed above the gum line and is used to connect the implants to the restorations.

Implant Restoration

Once the area around the abutment has healed, you will return to our office to receive your permanent restoration. We work with an outstanding local lab to provide lifelike restorations that will restore the appearance of your smile and function of your bite. The combination of dental implants and abutments will secure your crown, bridge, or denture in place with unparalleled strength.
