Common Applications

A traditional dental crown is a single-tooth restoration placed on top of a damaged tooth to completely cover its surface. This trusted restorative solution can be used to:

  • Strengthen a weakened tooth
  • Preserve a cracked tooth
  • Improve the appearance and function of a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Enhance the look of your smile by covering up a severely stained or irregularly shaped tooth

In addition to offering traditional dental crowns, we also offer implant-supported crowns for patients with a missing tooth. An implant-supported crown is placed on top of a dental implant (an artificial tooth root), restoring the function and appearance of a smile with unmatched strength.

Advanced Materials

In the past, crowns were made of metal. Advances in dentistry allow patients to enjoy crowns made of much more lifelike materials. We partner with a local lab to provide custom crowns made of all-porcelain, zirconia, or IPS e.max® ceramic, which mimic the look and sheen of natural enamel. Your crown will be custom-crafted to match the color of your smile in order to blend with surrounding teeth as flawlessly as possible.

Placing a Dental Crown

Placing a crown is typically a two-step process. The first step involves preparing the tooth for crowning. During the preparation process, we will gently reshape the chewing surface and sides of your tooth to create a strong base for your restoration. Although most patients only require local anesthesia, we can also provide sedation if you are feeling nervous about treatment.

Once the tooth has been prepared, we will take detailed impressions and send them to our partner lab, where they will be used to fabricate your custom crown. We can provide a temporary restoration to wear while your crown is being created. After roughly two weeks, you will return to our office to receive your crown. The dentist will remove your temporary restoration and place the new crown over your tooth. Finally, he will use a strong adhesive to bond the crown in place. With proper care, your restoration can last for more than a decade.
