What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses sedative medication to help patients relax and reduce stress during dental procedures. It is sometimes referred to as "sleep dentistry."
Types of Sedation We Offer
- Nitrous Oxide: You breathe nitrous oxide, otherwise known as "laughing gas" combined with oxygen through a mask that is placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax. Dr. Smrecek can control the amount of sedation you receive. This is the only form of sedation that allows you to drive yourself home after the procedure.
- Oral Sedation: For minimal sedation, you take a pill. Typically, this medication is a member of the same drug family as Valium. It is taken about an hour before the procedure. The pill will make you drowsy, although you will still be awake at the beginning of the appointment. This type of sedation is most commonly associated with sleep dentistry.
- IV Sedation: You receive a sedative drug by an IV (in a vein). It goes to work very quickly and the level of sedation is tailored to fit your needs, for more predictable results. This method allows the Dr. Smrecek to continually control the level of sedation.
Regardless of which type of sedation you receive, there is always a local anesthetic (numbing medication) at the site where Dr. Smrecek is working to block pain and keep you as comfortable as possible. During sedation, Dr. Smrecek and his trained team are always with you monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and observing you closely throughout your sedation visit.
